The rice bowl of Sri Lanka

Paddy rice or ‘rough rice’ is produced to varying extents in all twenty-five districts of the nine provinces in Sri Lanka during both ‘Yala’ and ‘Maha’ cultivation seasons.

The top ten paddy producing districts for the latest Maha season under cultivation: (approximate figures released by the Department of Agriculture, Sri Lanka)

1) Anuradhapura  – 379,000 metric tons
2) Kurunegala  – 266,300 metric tons
3) Polonnaruwa  – 204,000 metric tons
4) Hambantota  – 179,000 metric tons
5) Ampara  – 126,500 metric tons
6) Monaragala  – 122,050 metric tons
7) Badulla  – 76,800 metric tons
8) Matale  – 63,300 metric tons
9) Puttalam  – 59,900 metric tons
10) Trincomalee 51,450 metric tons
