A biomass fuelled power plant has been in operation at the Nipuna rice mill since 2006. This two megawatt plant uses the tons of paddy husk that is generated in the milling process as its fuel. Paddy husk that used to be discarded in landfills prior to the plant coming into operation, is now put to good use.
Nipuna is the first rice mill in Sri Lanka to operate a biomass fuelled power plant which meets 100 percent of its power requirements for mill operations. Plans are currently under discussion to increase the capacity of the power plant to five megawatts.
Nipuna takes every possible initiative in all stages of milling operations to remain as environmentally friendly as possible.
